Stockholm Water Prize - Nominations Open for 2021 Prize

The Stockholm International Water Institute (SIWI) is a policy institute that generates knowledge and informs decision-making towards sensible water policy.

SIWI administers the annual Stockholm Water Prize (SWP), first presented in 1991, which honours outstanding contributions to the sustainable use and protection of the world's water resources. The aim is to provide its winners (laureates) with global acknowledgement and visibility.

Candidates should have made outstanding contributions to the conservation and protection of water resources and to improved health and well-being of the planet's inhabitants and ecosystems. Achievements can be within appropriate fields of science, technology, education, public policy, or practice.

Candidates must be nominated for the competition in one or both of two categories:

  • Policy and Practices
  • Research

Eligible nominees are individuals or organisations from any country that have:

  • Made outstanding contributions of lasting significance for the sustainable use and protection of the world's water resources.
  • Achieved work of proven impact and/or great potential within the fields of science, technology, education, public policy, or practice related to sustainable use and protection of the world's water resources.
  • Provided stimulation for further important contributions to the conservation and protection of water resources and to improved health and well-being of the planet's inhabitants and ecosystems.

Laureates receive a prize of SEK 1 million and a specially designed sculpture, as well as enhanced global recognition and the opportunities this brings.

Initial nominations for the 2021 Prize must be submitted by 30 September 2020.

Nominators of shortlisted candidates will be invited to submit a more detailed nomination. The laureate shall be announced during UN World Water Week in March 2021 and will receive their prize at the Royal Stockholm Water Prize Ceremony at Stockholm City Hall.
