Events Series Announced to Help Find Environmental Solutions to COVID-19

Thursday, 04 June, 2020

The Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) has announced that an innovative online events series will take place at the end of June 2020 to find environmental solutions to COVID-19. The series will involve short, virtual workshop sessions and a variety of online resources and networking opportunities. All sessions will be facilitated.

NERC is looking for participants to get involved with the Environmental Solutions Ideas Series to find strategies to support the UK's economic and social recovery from the pandemic. It is calling on scientists, researchers, innovators, policymakers, business people and NGOs from across all relevant fields to join the event.

It is hoped that the environmental solutions will be taken forward and developed through numerous existing and future UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) funding routes.

The themes being investigated are:

  • Current frontiers: capturing and reflecting upon relevant research and innovation since the outbreak first emerged.
  • Managing pathogens in the environment: environmental solutions to reduce the potential for emergence and spread of pathogens.
  • Greening the build back: putting sustainability at the core of rebuilding and reshaping a net zero economy.
  • Healthy places, healthy people: environmental solutions to increase the health of places to support the mental and physical health of people.

Duncan Wingham, NERC Executive Chair, said:

'Environmental science has a huge contribution to make to support our recovery from COVID-19, and this event series will bring together a multidisciplinary community to find creative solutions to the challenges we face. This is an exciting project and I hope people with a range of expertise will take part.'

The series, hosted entirely online, will take place from 15 June to 16 July 2020. Interested parties are encouraged to express their interest using the online form by 12 June 2020 (12:00).

The number of participants at each workshop is limited and some spaces have been reserved for invited policy, business, third sector and researcher attendees from a broad range of relevant disciplines, including those not traditionally funded by NERC. There are a number of additional spaces available and NERC will select attendees to ensure that all the workshops have a diverse spread of viewpoints, research interests and research experience.
